Skincare tips - Prep for Competition

Hello! I am a makeup artist and I do TONS of shows. People ask me all the time about how to get their skin looking really good BEFORE competition day...so I wanted to throw out some tips/ideas and have any of you give me yours as well! This isn't JUST for the ladies!

1. Wash face AFTER you work out!

2. Take a lemon, cut into quarters and the week before the competion every night rub the lemon wedge on the face after clensing and rinse. (This is a really good, mild exfoliator)

3. Make sure you use a good alcohol FREE toner to keep the PH in your skin balanced.

4. To Exfoliate before you tan add some baking soda to your gel face cleanser. This is a good way to prep the face for any tanning.

5. If you are using Retinol or collagen boosters do it at night.

6. Two days before competition morning make a mask with steeped green tea, mashed sweet potato and egg whites. This mask wakes up the skin, adds vitamins, hydrates and tighens all at the same time.

Do you all have any good skincare tips to share??

Once you have skin looking good, its easier for us pro makeup artists to make you look even more fabulous on the morning of the show! Smile

Thanks Lyndsey. These are great tips!

Something I think is super important is to exfoliate your whole body!

For the week or two leading up to a show, every day or two I use exfoliating gloves (that you can get at the drug store or grocery store) and a sugar type scrub like Citrus Body Scrub from Liquid Sun Rayz; my favorite shower gel mixed with Epsom Salt or any scrub that has some type of crystal or “grit” in it. I then moisturize like crazy when I get out of the shower.

This helps keep your body smooth and free of dry skin; will help your contest tan go on easier and stay on better once the time comes and will help the tan wash off more evenly after the show.

I'll keep thinking. Look forward to reading ideas from others!

Rachel - You are ABSOLUTELY right!!! I adore Liquid Sun Rayz's scrub and those gloves are such a good suggestion. I am going to have to grab some! Exfoliating before any kind of tan is so important. I had a Liquid Sun Rayz gal come and tan a bunch of girlfriends and myself for fun a few weeks ago and my tan is just now fading 2 weeks later! Amazing.
Thanks so much for sharing!!!

LSR is great for everyday tanning and for contest – and the lotion and body scrub smell yummy! I always have a lotion in my purse.

A couple more “body” things I thought of...

1. If you tan in the tanning bed, when you come home, put on a layer of self tanner. I know this might sound weird, but it really deepens your tan. Then, by the time you get your contest tan on, your base tan is really deep and the color looks even better on stage. I like Estee Lauders self tanner, but your favorite will work great. Just be sure to wash your hands quickly or use rubber gloves when applying. You don't want orange Oompa-Loompa hands.

If you don’t tan in the tanning bed, get out in the sun and tan, use self tanner and/or put on a couple of coats of Pro Tan or LSR's competition color. The more of a base tan you have when you arrive at the show to get spray tanned, the better your tan will look and the less running and streaking you will have on stage.

2. If you are going to do any waxing to your face and/or body before the show, I recommend starting to do this a month or two before the show. If your skin isn’t used to waxing it can get red, irritated and sometimes break out. If you wait until a couple of days before the show to do your first waxing, often that irritation shows up on stage and the tan can make it look even worse. If you already wax regularly, you are probably ok to do it closer to the show, but still use caution.
