I am 5 weeks out from my first figure competition and I'm having REALLY bad problems with bloating. I would love any suggestions about cause/remedies! I can't go on stage with a big buddha belly! I have upped my fiber intake by taking in citrucel 2x per day but it hasn't helped....

I find that if I take fiber supplements or have any extra fiber, like Fiber One cereal, I bloat horribly. It can also be the foods you are eating, especially if you are using a cheap protein powder where the main ingredient is whey protein concentrate. Dairy can also pose a problem if you are lactose intolerant. For me, dairy is strictly a no-no. What seems to help me during times of high carbs and also pre-contest, is Beverly's enzyme supplement. If you post your diet and the supps you are currently on, perhaps we can pinpoint the problem.

Here is what my current diet/supp program looks like:
Meal 1: 1/2 c oats, 3 oz. chicken, 1 whole egg, 2 whites Meal 2: Shake with 1 scoop MP, 30g oats, 2 TBS flax seed meal Meal 3: 1/2 c brown rice, 5 oz. lean meat, salad/veggies(typically broccoli, asparagus or green beans), 3-5 g healthy fat (typically almond butter or oil & vin dressing) Meal 4: same as #2 Meal 5: 5 oz. lean meat, 3 oz. green veg., 5 g healthy fat Supps are as follows: Super Pak at Meal 1 Fish Oil: 3 tabs at Meals 1 & 5 Lean Out: 2 per meal Density: 2 per meal Ultra 40: 2 per meal Quadracarn: 6-9 tabs per day depending on training day or rest day I am drinking 1-1.5 gals of water per day and 2 scoops citrucel per day and nothing seems to be helping. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

How's your salt intake? I find too much causes me to bloat as well as Flax and broccoli.
Could also be the citrucel.. Hope it goes away soon! Being bloated is so uncomfortable!! "Lack of Time?...Or...Lack of Desire?" -Lee Mein |

Well, unless you are constipated, the Citrucell can increase gas, cramping, and bloat. Combined with the flax and broccoli that Tee mentioned, it could be compounding your problem.
So,unless you have trouble with regularity, I'd eliminate the Citrucell for a few days and see how you feel. Aram N. Hamparian Pro Natural Bodybuilder |

Are you cooking the oats? A lot of people like to eat them raw, that's one issue.
Describe "bloat". Upper GI? Lower GI? Gas or just a stuffed feeling? Frank "Lift and be happy. Lift harder and be excited...Get Excited, Get Big!!!" |

I am cooking my morning oats but taking the ones in my shakes raw. By "bloated" I mean my abdomen almosst looks like I'm pregnant! I went to the Dr. and he said it was constipation and told me to drink a bottle of magnesium citrate and use miralax everyday. Things got moving after the bottle last night but my abdomen is still distended.

If you had the time to monitor your diet, you could see at what time of the day you start to bloat. As time is running out, I would suggest taking out the eggs and replacing with more chicken (eggs can cause "gas"). You should be changing your shakes for "white" protein two weeks out from a show anyway (can cause bloat due to lactose intolerance). Oats can cause bloat if you are gluten sensitive (switch to gluten-free oats). Green veg can cause bloat and should be stopped about 2-3 days prior to show. Side-effect of the fibre could be bloat too. I am wheat, gluten and lactose intolerant and choose my carbs and shakes very carefully, pre-contest I lived on chicken/turkey and rice cakes for three weeks to cut out bloated stomach.
