Glutamine study

Can anyone point me to one or more glutamine use studies that involved **** use of glutamine by the test subjects. I'm in a discussion with someone on another board who claims that all of the positive glutamine use studies have involved only IV delivery of glutamine, and not **** ingestion. Thanks.

VA_MadDog,

Thanks for noting the use of oral...

Oral is now available.

I don't know about you, but I always drag an IV with me where ever I go, it's much easier than oral ingestion....

I can't imagine Beverly or any other company would think that ingesting glutamine orally would work.

HA, HA what a joke!!

Good luck with that.

I attended a small seminar with Charles Poliquin last year, and he was really big on glutamine, and the way they administered the glutamine was orally in capsule form.

Although the issue of delivery wasn't explicitly raised, he thought the quantity was what mattered. Knowing his background in performance training, I think if the delivery of the glutamine was important he would have discussed.

By the way, the amount he specified for post workout recovery was off the charts. I think he said for my bodyweight (220), I should take between 40-80g immediately after training. With that type of quantity, I'd have to hook up a feedbag of Bev's new glutamine around my neck and walk around with it! Needless to say, I'm sticking with the 10g sipping through my workout!

Interesting discussion.

A while back I stumbled upon this article which has a lot of refferences.

I personally am a big believer in Glutamine.
I attended one of Charles Poliquin's seminars & he is very sold on the use of glutamine.

Interested to see what opinions others have of the above articles.

Tom - Did you intend to reference an article? I did not see a link or reference.

Tom A. - After having read the article you referenced I would have to say that my enthusiasm for glutamine use has been diminished. The article certainly seemed well researched and included numerous references.

What I took away from it was that glutamine supplementation may be beneficial in very large doses (As you mention that Poloquin recommends -but very expensive) And that it may be helpful when on a low carb diet to help prevent catabolism - like the last 4-5 weeks of a contest diet.

If anyone else knows of studies that contradict the conclusions of the linked article I'm still looking.

Try checking out the new No Nonsense Supplement guide, as well as the L-Glutamine and Glutamine Select links on the front page of the www.bodybuildingworld.com website to read more information and research about Glutamine.

I don't put much faith in these studies, otherwise my cupboards would be stocked with myostatin inhibitors and nocturnal protein formula powders instead of my Mass Amino's and Ultra Size.
During the last 5 weeks preceding a major show last year,I was taking 40-50 grams of glutamine along with 20-30 Muscle Synergy per day. On a calorie restricted, pre-contest diet I put on 4 lbs. of lean muscle during this time frame, culminating in probably the best condition I had achieved for a show.
Expensive? Sure.I eliminated this protocol from my training this year, and didn't attain the same quality of conditioning.
I believe that high dosages of glutamine combined with BCAA's and L-Carnitine before, during and post workout, will give a thermogenic effect, hence, cardio is never done for fat loss purposes....Too catabolic anyway.
Personally, I feel a big difference when I'm on glutamine, especially when concentrated around the workout. Wouldn't be without it.
