I calculated my necessary fat intake to be about 79 grams/day. I take 3 EFA gold's per day. Any suggestions on how I should get the rest (I know that my protein, carbs etc. have some fat in them). Increase my EFA Gold intake? Add olive oil, flaxseed to things etc?
First off make sure 79g fits well with your other macros. Typically if your carbs are higher your fat should be a but lower and vice versa. Now as far as the other fats go, flax seeds and oil are great sources. Others include: extra virgin olive oil, fish oil capsules, efa golds, natty pb or other nut butters, mct oil etc. So in other words there are a number of fat sources to choose from. Depending on my goals I will use flax, olive oil and fish oil caps as my staple fat sources in my diet. I add flax to protein shakes, olive oil goes good on veggies and meets and fish oils are great to fill the wholes at any meal.
First calculate what you get from your protein sources. For example 90% lean beef has about 8 grams per 4 oz, a whole egg 6 grams. If your protein is in the 200+ range chances are you'll be very close to your 79 grams. We have found that heavey cream added to shakes is also a very good source if you are trying to add lean muscle and limiting carbs to 25% or less of your caloric intake. EFA and sources datas4 recommended are excellent to make up any deficit as well.
Another good source is nuts (walnuts, cashews, etc) plus you can take them anywhere, and can act as a filler between meals. Some seeds contains quality fats as well.
I usually listen to my body, as far as fat goes. I do take EFAs two times daily, but the longer you are at this game the more you know your body, and what it needs. Your body will tell you when it needs fat. A good quick fix for me is Almonds, great fat source, easy to carry around, keeps insulin levels steady.
