zma vs. protein before bed

Dear Folks,

I'm 53 and have been getting in shape and losing weight although I have about 15# more to go. My main interest is functional fitness to support my life style which is very active outdoors stuff.

I've been thinking I may benefit from zma but the product I bought says to take on an empty stomach before bed. I thought taking some slow digesting protein such as casein before bed was the best anti catabolic.

By the way I'm lifting 3 days a week and cardio 3 days.

Thank you for your help!

I've often taken ZMA within 30 minutes or even while eating my last meal of the day and I never felt a noticable lack of potency.

Have the best of both.

30 minutes prior to meal...ZMA. Drink with at least 8 oz of water.

Get some good rest.

Calcium is the main competitor for absorption sites with ZMA. So, the most important thing is to avoid taking ZMA with any calcium containing foods or supplements. Casein substrates can contain some calcium (example, calcium caseinate is the main source of casein protein). I don’t know if there would be enough calcium to interfere with absorption or not but, just to be sure, I would take the ZMA 1/2 hour before bed and then take your casein-based drink at bed time, 1/2 hour after taking ZMA. ZMA capsules would digest and absorb faster than most macronutrient-dense protein drinks so it makes sense to take it first.
