I worked with a bev consultant last year, I did fine for my first contest. This year i'm not working directly with a beverly consultant but am using all bev supplements the same way recomended last year. There are a few differences in my diet this year compared to last, and I just wanted to get some opinions on my diet.
p.s. i'm about 3 weeks out right now
I am not doing the typical carb meal this year but instead am doing this.

3 day carb cycle
2 days at 50g carbs
1 day at 100g carbs

This is the only real difference except one other

My carb sources are a little different

-Grits, Cream of rice, rice, rice/corn cakes
(Oatmeal, sweet potatoes/reg potaotes were cut out last week)

Other than that my diet is relatively the same as last year (typical bev diet)

I was just wondering what you all think about the way i cycle my carbs as opposed to the "carb meal" method.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill.. The carb cycling as you are doing works very well for people - instead of the standard twice weekly carb-up meals. The only thing I'd question is the cream of rice, grits, rice cakes and rice. Based on your metabolism some people process these starchy carbs differently and I believe they tend to be more 'fast acting' and higher glycemic then slower digesting oats and yams sources. So - with that..not sure why you switched to them now.. and eliminated the oats/yams. You know your body best.. if it's working - don't change it!

Thanks for responding Brochas,

My trainer had me elimiante oats, yams because he said that they tend to make people hold water. We'll see, I seem to be doing ok right now. I just did 2 days at 0 carbs and today is 300g, yummmm.

Bill,

Is your trainer a competitor or just a trainer? At this point, water retention is your friend, but at the same time, 3 weeks out, it's best to start a herbal diruetic, if your going to add one prior to contest time.

What is your BFC? Are you vasuclar or flat-looking, like a swimmer?

He's a trainer. He trains many competitors, top npc guys and the like, that's why I'm working with him this year.

I change according to what i have had to eat, for example right now I look a bit flat but am starting to fill out b/c i am loading today.

I would guess my bf is around 6 or so right now, I know that i look better than last year at this point.

Thanks for the advice on the herbal diuretic though, b/c I was a bit concerned about adding it in, and I am 2 weeks out, put 3 by mistake.

Bill,

I wouldn't change anything, if that is the reason you are asking. Your trainer is calling the shots and for you to change something, especially without his knowledge, he may make changes based on his believing your following the diet to a "T" and that may totally alter the outcome, negatively much like a doctor giving you a prescription based on you not taking any medication at all, when in fact, you are.

However, the type of carbs is also influential should you be doing various types of cardio.
