I have been reading alot of info. and there are alot of pros. who consume high glycemic carbs. after they lift.. But alot of beverly users seem to disagree with this- saying that slow digesting carbs like oatmeal are best after you train? What do you guys think?

Hey I go with Mass Maker. It has Malto which is a high glycemic carb, which Fitdoc pointed out to me, thank, and inulin. Inulin is a rice derivative if Im not mistaken and this form is very slowly released over a 10 hour period. I add MP for quick absorbtion. SO I guess beverly athletes use a bit of a high glycemic carb, but just not plain sugar or dextrose.
To be honest I dont put much stock in what pros do. But yes, this is a center of a huge debate these days. Jason Jason Theobald www.geocities.com/chezburger10/JASONTHEOBALDBIO.html |

Found it ---
Muscle Provider has an extremely low, in fact irrelevant amount of Maltodextrin. In fact it is not really there for nutritional content. It is primarily there because it helps the Muscle Provider mix well in water. A food chemist cannot just put some proteins into a bottle and that's it. Above and beyond the filtration, sometimes you have to have something like maltodextrin in the formula for the mixture to be possible. Now, lets address the Glycemic issue. The glycemic index charts are based on the body's response to 25 grams of any particular carb source with an absence of any other protein or fat. The amount of maltodextrin in Muscle Provider is so low, that it is not even the source of the 2 grams of carbs you see per scoop. That is simply inherent in the protein. It just so happens that 16 grams of this protein blend will yield 2 grams of carb. Just like 23 grams of protein from Egg whites will yield a carb or two. So regardless of the glycemic index of maltodextrin, it is not relevent in this case. Simple cheap grade maltodextrine is usually considered a sugar. However Beverly uses a Penta-Saccharide Maltodextrin which is a complex carb and is glycemically lower. Yes, even carb sources like maltodextrin can come in 5 grades, and yes Beverly always uses the top grade. |

Thanks for the help guys, I was wondering what is a good whole food alternative instead of using 6 scoops mass maker after training. I tried a cup of oatmeal + 2 scoops muscle provider (approx.90 carbs + 44 protein)..
Mike p.s. jason your article in the new newsletter is awesome, and inspirational-could you post the 7/70 training program that worked so well for you.-congratulations man (400-500 squat)-those are grat pondages, squating is my favorite also followed up with heavy bulgarian deadlifts. lifter |

Mecca,
I ran out of Mass Maker when I was bulking so I asked my advisor (Mark Ritter) what I could use as a substitute for my normal 3 scoops of Mass Maker and 2 scoops of Muscle Provider. His reply was "14 egg whites, 8 oz. oatmeal, 6 oz. sweet potato" I never realized how great Mass Maker was until I tried to eat all of this post workout... UGH.... |

Mike,
I can only thank you for half of that response. I was in the newsletter, but the program and the squat numbers are of Kevin Burger, who also frequents this site. The article right before mine. If you want more info on the 7/70 program Im pretty sure its in a back issue of BodyMuscle, shop around on the main page, you should be able to find it. So much debate on this one. I believe the main reason for the carbs was the insulin spike. However, Dr. Serrano stated that Muscle Provider can cause a spike.
The spike is supposed to be the best for transporting all the good nutrients to the burned out muscles. So, perhaps a couple of spoons of honey then 5 minutes later, a shake. This is one way creatine is best transported. It should work the same for a protein drink. In all honesty, I believe the shakes are the best thing for a post workout. If on a gaining phase, a shake followed by a solid meal one hour later is best. My favorite is 3 scoops of Mass Maker with 2 scoops Muscle Provider, cinnamon added. Has anyone tried adding ricemilk to Muscle Provider? Frank |
