Hi guys! I'm having a little bit of an issue getting my 50/20/30 diet down pat...I'm a vegetarian and so keeping protein high, even with UMP can be hard. Two quick questions: 1. do vegies count for carbs? I'm only over by a few but trying to keep them below the 75g limit. Also, 2. Are there any vegetarians out there that struggle with keeping protein high? I was thinking of trying to supplement with one Isopure protein shake (along with UMP), as they have about 50 g. per shake. I need about 190g. of protein. I can post my diet, but I'm doing everything right, just have trouble with those two things. Thanks in advance! Monty (BTW....I'm going to be doing my first show at the Northern, if any of you figure girls want to get together, drop me a message!)

What kind of vegetarian? Is fish in the diet? Vegan? Frank Frank "Lift and be happy. Lift harder and be excited...Get Excited, Get Big!!!"

Frank: I eat some salmon on a limit bases (I had my gallbladder removed and have become very sensitive to saturated fats, so I'm a vegie due to that, not by choice!). I'm okay with dairy (get sick from high fat cheese though), and eat a lot of tofu, tempheh, etc.

Well, there goes my natural peanut butter alternative! However, I also have my issues with soy. Since you are able to use fish for protein and it is not a vegan lifestyle, would suggest using white fish, talapia and some others that are not high in fats, including tuna. Using tomato with onions, peppers and garlic (if you choose) can make great fish feasts. Let me see if I have an old Beverly diet that was for vegetarians. Frank Frank "Lift and be happy. Frank, That would be so helpful. Thank you. I can handle about a Tablespoon of Natural PB, I put it in my oats. I just have to be careful. Thanks for the fish suggestions, I shall see if I can get some nice filets from Wild Oats. Do veggies count in my carb count? Monty

Veggies do count in the carb count, but it just depends what is being called veggies. Carrots as opposed to broccoli?

Really....huh.....well, I'm eating carrots, bellpeppers, tomatoes, lettuce, salads, etc... Can I find a list of good vs. bad somewhere? Sorry for all the questions! Monty

Hi Monty, For quality protein sources you can use any kind of lean animal-source protein you tolerate. This includes eggs and egg whites, cottage cheese and low fat cheeses, lean white meats (such as fish, chicken or turkey breast). (There are also many kinds and cuts of very lean red meats that are nearly as lean as white meats. Round steak is one example.) Other quality protein sources include Muscle Provider, Ultra 40’s, and Mass Aminos. (Mass Aminos can help improve utilization of protein from all food sources.) Re: Carb content of vegetables – All vegetables contain some amount of carbohydrate. They range from very low (5 grams or less per serving) to very high (15 grams or more per serving). High carb veggies are grouped in with other carb sources like grains and legumes. Starchy vegetables include corn, peas, legumes (dry beans and peas), potatoes, winter squashes, etc. Even carrots fit into the starch group if the serving is large enough - 1 cup carrots contains about the same amount of carb as a slice of bread or ½ cup pasta. Low starch veggies usually come from the stalk (celery), leaf (lettuce, spinach), or buds (broccoli), and seedless pods (green beans, peppers) of the plant. Roots (potato) and seeds (corn) or mature pods (peas) are the areas that most plants store their energy (carbs). USDA has an on-line site where you can find comprehensive nutritional information on hundreds of foods: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ Best wishes, Rita
