I'm sure you'll get quite a range of feedback to this question. My input would be that partly it depends on your body. For me, I find that if I try to consume more than 40 grams in one meal, I end up getting gassy. So I keep it at 40 or less per meal, 6 times per day.

I think Doug is right.

This is an individual thing. If you have an upset stomach every time you eat XX much protein. Cut it back a bit and see what happens.

We are all different. The amount of lean mass, frequency of exercise and intensity of exercise are all going to impact the amount each of us as an individual needs.

The reality is that no one can say definitely how much would be needed for an individual with out doing extensive tests on blood and urine.

Studies have been done on various groups, athletes, couch potatos, etc. But if you are not in one of those groups the data will mean little for you.

I have found that more is always better.

I've read that if you consume more than 40 grams of protein within two hours the excess amounts do not do you any good.

Unfortunately things like this are commonly written. Rarely is there any research or data to support the text.

Where is the data and not good for whom?

Same thing that high protein diets are hard on the liver or kidneys. There is data that supports this, BUT it is on renal patients. Again we would want the data on healthy weight training individuals.

As long as a person is healthy, exercising and consuming plenty of water there should be no problems.

My understanding is there has not been definitive proof that your body can only handle so much protein at one sitting. I once had heard that it can only absorb 40g per sitting and the rest is waste. this is not true since everyone will handle protein differently.

I think there was a thread realted to this once before and Fitdoc chimed in.....hopefully he can help out!

I'm with ETX- when it comes to protein - more is better than not enough. The 40g limit does not have any research to back it up for healthy individuals, at least none that I have run across. At some point the extra protein would simply become too many calories and could convert to fat - but it converts in a manner that is less efficient than the conversion of excess carbs to fat so I would really not worry about that. Too much of any food will eventually make you fat.

I was wondering the same thing. How much is too much. I am eating a gaining diet that MArk R sent to me and he has me eating 75 grams of protein at each meal.( 3scoops mass maker, 1 scoop egg, 1 cup rice ,1 cup veg. 5 oz. meat.)
I weigh 230lbs. I am concerned about long term health is this too much???
