Just curious, is there a difference between the yam and a sweet potato on the bev diet? We have been buying and eating yams. The diet says sweet potato.

Hi run4fun....in appearance sweet potatoes are darker in color because they're higher in beta-carotene...yams have about 10g more carbs per serving than sweet potatoes, but both are a very
good source...hope this helps...Sherman

I once thought they were the same. I looked it up on the net and found a great deal of difference. Sherman, you're right.

I'll take the sweet potato. The meat is so much softer than most yams.

A lot of times the supermarkey does not know the difference so it might say yam but, actually be a sweet potato or vice versa. Like Sherman said sweet taters have darker skin and brighter orange inside while yams are lighter all around. Sweet potatoes are better but, the card difference is small enough that a yam is probably fine.

thanks, I was concerned about the carb differences... I heard that it the US typically doesnt have the real yam here, its really a sweet potato, they just call it a yam.

According to the diet tracking software that I use to track my calories sweet potatoes have 117kcal, 28cho, 3.4 fiber, and 13 sugar grams as compared to yams which have 70kcal 19cho, and 2.7 fiber with 0 sugar. Thus sweet potatoes appear to have a higher gi than yams (yam serving according to my software was 1/2 cup, sweet potato serving was 1 normal size sweet potato.) Hope this helps.
