It can be substituted, I dont see a huge problem. I think it just comes down to how strict on whatever plan you have you want to be.

Personally I wouldnt eat it with my oats. I prefer to keep most fats and carbs separate. Sure, Ill take 3 flax caps with a morning breakfast of oats and eggs. But if I were to have an appreciable amount of peanut butter I would have it in place of the flax or cream in a shake. I just put 2tbs on a plate and eat it slowly with a spoon, almost like a little treat to go along with my shake. Keep in mind though 2 tbs is 190 cals, whereas 1 tbs of flax is 110 cals or so. Personally Im not gonna sweat 80 cals, but some might.

Did someone say, "Peanut Butter"?

All you old posters knew I would respond. I am going to say if you maintain the lower carb diet and you are about 8% go for all the peanut butter you can eat. I averaged 4 jars (16 oz) per week and I didn't gain a pound, in fact, cut more fat off my body. Maintain your cardio and lifting routine, it will do you good. Add more carbs to your diet, you'll suffer.

My frame is 5'5" and I was weighing 160 at that time. I was carbaphobic just coming off shows and only did my Mon and Thurs carb ups. I didn't want to add carbs to my offseason diet. I believe I may try that again, too. Thanks for the memories/reminder.

I eat three types of fat each day, contest or no contest, fatty fish (salmon, sword etc..) flax oil and natural peanut butter. As I lower carb intake I increse fat intake accordingly. I have 1-2 tbsp peanut butter daily, 8 oz. fatty fish and 15-20 grams flax oil. This compromises around 20% caloric intake and as I stated that goes up as the carbs drop from there normal 45% to 10% or less.

Razz Glad to see that I'm among GOOD company with my peanut butter addiction. I try to limit 1-2 Tbs. a day .. but I gotta have my p-nut butter (Natural, of course)! Sean, great advise on upping fats accordingly as you lower your carbs. I noticed your pre-contest diet the final weeks did include your 2-Tb. PB.. does a body good.. !

I am such a PB addict I cannot even have it in the house as I will eat too much of it. I have it on occasion at my Mom's house, they are addicts too. My sister is visiting and she is smart enough to go shopping on her way here..(she knows my cupboards are bare of what THEY consider essential...you know, bread & sugar) and she brought Natural PB so of course I had to have a small taste. But no worry of a binge because if I eat the whole jar in a few days they will find me out !!

Man does this hit close to home. I have repeatedly tried to place a jar of natural pb in the fridge thinking I would be able to eat it in moderation, but that all flies out the window withing a day or two. <oink, oink>
The only way I can eat the stuff is to nab the 21 gm single serve packages--not natural PB, unfortunately, but I eat it in my cottage cheese anyway. Enforced portion control, gotta love it Wink
OH, and I can only have 2 or 3 of these things on hand at a time or else the PB monster will emerge... well, I guess it could be worse, I could do the same thing with chocolate!

Boy can I relate! Must be something going around. You think crack is addicting... I like to cut up a half of Granny Smith apple into small pieces and put some on , what a treat! When its close to a show I'll eat it straight up in between meals. It does a good job curbing hunger.

I have found a new love in almond butter - its more expensive but has less carbs & saturated fat than peanut butter & tastes sooooo good.

Cashew better is awsome too! A tip with all the butters... store them at room temp with the jar upside down to prevent the chunks from forming on the bottom of the right side up jars. I was eating p-butter for years and always hated the hard stuff on the bottom until my wife flipped the jar upside down and "Poof" problem gone! Noe I get every last bite.

I avoid that problem by not storing them. Wink

Open Monday morning. Gone Tuesday afternoon.

Of all nut butters, I believe almond and/or walnut are the best for the body. All seem to do good, though.

Kristy: I have tried natural p-nut butter blended with MP or US as a pudding.. that is awesome.. it tastes just like chocolate-peanut butter frosting. Too good to be GOOD! Off season - p-nut butter is my daily treat!

There was a time I broke meals down to about 10 per day. Two of them consisted of PB/MP or US paste on rice cakes. BOY, did I lean out at that time. I had protein in each one of those meals.

Frank

PS Shorty. NO, PB was not in every meal. ~Thought about it~

Frank,
How in the world can you eat four jars of peanut butter per week and not gain any body fat?
Oh, you were doing 4 hours of cardio every morning....

LOL,

I was already lean. I was on a low carb, contest diet after a contest. I stayed on the contest diet (4 weeks out plan) and began consuming 2, then 3, then 4. I stayed at that for about 4 months, then began dropping the PB out. I continued mild cardio. 45 minutes on a treadmill, walking.
