Well i'm a little confused. I've heard 2 different ideas from Beverly to gain lean mass:
  • Diet with Ratio of 50% Protein/20% Carbs,30% Fats will allow you to gain muscle and lose fat
  • Mark Ritters Gain and Harden Diet

So what to do, what to do? I'd rather stick to one diet plan and not switch it up every few weeks like the gain and harden plan. But i'm not sure if i'm seeing these right.

Lance,

Youd be best off going with the 50/20/30 but with calories over maintenance if trying to gain lean mass.

Mark stays extremely lean as discussed in his articles (6% or so), so his diet may not be best suited for you. Im not saying it wouldnt help you gain, and it might be 50/20/30 I havent looked at it in some time. But, Id start with a 50/20/30 used by someone that looks/looked similar to you now as you begin.

You could just use the email service also.

Here are some pictures of me taken Friday, the 19th. I just turned 18 within the last month.

Now i'm having a very tough time putting together a diet that is 50/20/30. Is there any 'simple' way to do it?

Lance,

I checked out the pics. Id say legs and back are strong points as well as having a decently defined midsection. Arms and chest need some work.

As for the diet, go to www.fitday.com. You can input your foods into a log and this will calculate your macronutrient ratios as well as calories. I use this all the time to check out my initial diet strategy. Then I can add a scoop of protein or flax or whatever to bring the ratios together. Its pretty easy, it just takes a minute to look up your foods. And you have to enter your protein powders and supps as a new food or under "create food". Just play with it a bit, its pretty nice once you get it all set up.

Or just email bev with those pics at bevnut@aol.com and tell them your goals. They will help you out.

BTW, for 19, or any age really, you are looking very good, stick with it for sure. You have until age 23 to enter a juniors section of a show if that is your interest. Give a beverly program a year and look into a few juniors shows you have what it takes to do well.

Good luck,

You are talking about a Junior's section of a show. In all honesty, i'm only planning on competing if i'm competitive. I'm bodybuilding very seriously because it is a blast and i'm an all or nothing kind of guy. I'm not just going to go and lift, i'm going to diet and everything. I figure if my body gets to the point where others say i should compete, than i'd love to. Otherwise i don't know if i'm good enough to compete.

But back on topic. Would i fare better at a Junior level or teenager competition? Or do i just have them confused?

Lance,

It depends on federation or group of bodybuilders you go with. NPC has natural contest, but most are not tested. I would say just go with the teen class AND novice of a weight class you'll fit in. All you would need is a little leaning out and you'll be tops in both classes.

NPC will look for a little larger, but again, it depends which one you're doing. I've seen the very lean beat out the thick and not so lean, even though the very lean didn't have good symmetry.

If you want to wait about one full year and eat with about 3500 to 4000 calories, good clean diet, you will definitely pack on some size and perhaps another 12 lbs of real muscle because of your age.

Ask anyone here about ADDING 5 to 7 lbs of real muscle in a year. Naturally. Many are very happy if they can achieve this goal.

Great going!

Yes, at least in the NPC, they have a junior class, under 23. You could also as Frank said cross over to the novice class for your weight.

I do think with your age you could add some nice mass in a year then look into it. I was just suggesting that if it was something you were thinking about I think you could do it. As with anything, I think time will help you, and its on your side.
