Can you incorporate protein bars into your diet?

Why doesn't BI make protein bars?

Which bars are ok to eat? Which are the worst?

Do not be mislead by the manufactuers of protien bars. There are no good bars on the market. All contain questionable ingrediants, protiens and sugar. Some even contain trans fats just like good old candy bars. Yes, I did partake in my share of bars at the Arnold (they were free so what the heck) but I never include them in my pre/post contest seasons. Once in a great moon as a treat, but thats it.

I agree with sully - protein bars should not be a regular part of a pre-contest diet.

Off season, having one of the better ones handy can help when circumstances make you miss a meal or where your food alternatives would all be much worse than what a protein bar has to offer. Look for a blend of proteins, low sugar content and low in saturated fats. The healthier ones are normally not the best tasting ones as a result.

SMof3. I agree.. I used to 'justify' having a bar due to convenience and just wanting to have one. However, I now opt for having protein pudding. Just take a scoop of Bev's protein and mix it with a little bit of water to thick consistency. I sometimes blend 100% egg, Regular and Choc. Muscle Provider - it's so good it tastes like frosting! If you are not pre-contest, add some oats and a touch of peanut butter. Honestly, it's better than any protein bar you can eat. Enjoy.. Wink

I agree for the most part that most protein bars are junk, but i recently tried a brand called tri-o-plex, they are made from real food and are pretty nutritionally sound. Has anyone else tried these? They have 33g protein, 34g carbs, mostly form oats.

Bill...

Those label claims for the Tri o plex bars are false. Reports have been done the label claims are far off (I can't find the website, maybe Fitdoc can help)

oh, that is such bad news! I just LOVE bars and I knew they weren't good for me, but I made excuses. I buy Mass Aminos and Ultra 40....but with 3 children, I cannot afford the protein powder right now, so I thought maybe "zone" bars or EAS bars would be ok for my sweet cravings. I know, I know.....

If money is tight eat FOOD. Forget the protein powders and bars. You will do fine without protein bars or powders...whole food is the king !!! Smile

Supermom,

I agree with Shorty. Many of these bars fall way short of their label claims, contain many inferior ingredients such as gelatin for its protein sources and have hidden sugars as well.
And to think that I was addicted to these things, eating about 3 bars per day! Confused
I came up with a solution: about 10 Ultra 40's, an ounce of walnuts, and maybe 5-6 Mass Amino's. I chew the Ultra 40's with the walnuts and swallow the Amino's with water. (If you can chew the Amino's, you are REALLY hardcore).
Breakdown: about 32 gr of First Class protein, 6-8 gr. carbs, 12-14 gr anabolic, good fats.
I defy any protein bar out there to match the nutritional density of this simple concoction.
And when you chew the walnuts with the Ultra 40's, it doesn't taste too bad Smile

Of course what Aram doesn't tell you is that he now has two partials and three crowns - but his dentist sends him a great Christmas card - lol

Have any of you tried the new protein bars by Jay Robb?

How do they measure up?

I agree with everyone else.

Bars are great and convenient if you are not getting ready to compete and have no other options. Not sure all are still better than candy bars.

Beverly does not have a bar because
Controlling the mfg process to ensure the bars always meet the label claim seems to be costly and difficult.

Inferior proteins are often used due to price, texture and taste.

Glycerine (sugar alcohols), hydrogentated oils, and sugars (fructose, high fructose corn syrup, etc) almost always have to be added for taste and texture.

Bottom line is would be very costly and difficult to produce a quality bar (best protein sources) that tastes good and is not as hard as a brick.

Have seen the Jay Robb bars but have not tried
em.

PS all the walking at shows like the Arnold offset the bars, right ? :-)

I had a few pieces of Pure Protein's new bar... triple crunch or something like that. Darn good. I'm sure the label claims were all true Roll Eyes
