Too Much Protein?

When I competeed in figure last year my trainer had me on a very high protein/low carb diet. I am 5'5 and was 115 lbs during contest. During my last 8 weeks I was consuming over 200 g of protein and less than 115 g carbs. I did whatever my trainer told me without question, but after researching protein I have found that your body can only use so much before it stores excess as fat. I have found that 0.8 x body weight (lbs) is the max grams of protein you should consume which would have put me around 92 grams. I was doubling that and then some!!!! During my last week of pre-comp I started to pee blood and thought my kidneys were not handling this high amount. Is this probably what happened? And is the 0.8 x body weight a standard in figuring out how much protein I need?? Please help, as I realize now after competing that I looked a little soft and maybe this is why...excess was stored as fat?!!

That seems like too much protein. You didn't specify how much fat and carbs you were eating, and supplements taken, but if you had blood in the urine this is something to have checked out by a physician.

If all checks out well, I would definitely consider a revised diet.

I did not take any supplements when I competed in 2009 besides hydroxicut (no caffiene) and protein. I was under 115 g of carbs per day and my only fat source was coming from a handful of almonds a day. I also took taroxatone (water pill) the last week (also advised, but later learned this was also not neccesary)..so maybe that could have caused the blood in urine along with the high levels of protein.

Revamping the diet now and trying to get it around 100 g of protein/day.

Thanks for the info Smile
