I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday.

Also, my lower right back is killing me! I will try and keep this short.

I am doing deadlifts for one of my back exercises. A week ago I did them and I felt something pull but didn’t hurt enough for me to stop. I continued with my workout and I was fine. Then on Friday night I did legs and it was fine. I could still feel something but nothing major. Then yesterday a bunch of us went golfing for my bachelor party. We started off on the golf range, I was hitting fine with no problems, then right before the 1st hole, I went to get my golf driver out of the back and my lower back popped!

I can’t feel the muscle/nerve to rub it (its one of those feelings). I took some Tylenol and it helped a bit but man, it hurts.

The physician at Walgreen’s said for me to take Motrin and Pepcid AC (cause I have heartburn as well lately) and put an ice pack on it as well.

Sorry for the long post.

I wanted to workout today (shoulders and biceps and cardio) but not sure if I should stay away from the gym. Should I swim? I am doing great on my schedule and routine but I do not want to be selfish.

Any other advice?

Thanks,
Steve

Go see a chiropractor! I can recommend a good on in Geneva (he is an athlete, has treated some local bbers and me) and one in South Elgin. Drop me a line if interested.

Where on your lower back does it hurt?? L5?? SI joint??

Is your back tight?? Can you feel a knot anywhere on the back??

Do you know what a "T" stretch is?? This may loosen things up a bit.

Did it hurt, or was there an increase in pain when it popped??

Ice is great.

Skip deadlifting for a while.

Take any back squats out of your program for awhile. Keep front squats and hacks (as long as they do not hurt).

The rest of your lifts should be fine. Try and see. If it hurts skip it.

As for the pain meds, make sure that they do not mask the pain giving you a false sense of stability. You can end up doing things you should not be doing and will pay for it later, like when the meds wear off. :-)

Up your intake of Omega 3's. Joint Care may not be a bad idea either.

Make sure you are staying well hydrated.

Massage, I would see a DC first, will help.

Make sure there is nothing serious and get it fixed. Low back issues can keep coming back to get you if you never take the time to address them the first time around.

After your chiropractic visit...you may want to look into an inversion table. http://www.teeterhangups.com/
I've had back issues on and off for years, and alot of the instances where it would "go out" were eleveated when I started using one regularly.
Just an idea...kind of preventative maintenance Smile

I wouldn't do anything but rest! If it continues to hurt, Don't waste any time see a good docter. An injury to the back like this could be a result of a nerve issue, like a herniated disc . I would'nt do anything , especially going to see a chiropractor, until you get an MRI. If you don't there's no real way of knowing whats going on in there. Doing any kind of exercise at all could do much more damage. Please take my advice on this. If you read my past posts you will see where I have plenty of experience with this, I had a very bad time with my back for many years, pushing it, and pushing it, resulting in emergency surgery of a herniated L3 disc that sheered right of the vertebrae crushing my nerve. And believe me to this day I've been regreting going into the gym that one day with a sore back doing heavy squats, because that was the last squat i've ever done, and they used to be my favorite exercise. Don't mean to scare you with this , but its a fact. So please be careful. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I made an appt with a chiropractor for this Saturday (which is the soonest I could get in). I am going to continue to train.....SMART until Saturday. So far, the pain is subsiding but I will feel more comfortable once I go to the doc to see what he says.

Wondering how your back is? Low back pain along with other nagging areas seem to be apart of the iron game. Roger and I see a Chiropractor- Matt Haumesser every week or two to get adjustments. I strongly suggest finding a good doc and sticking to a routine. The adjustments keep your system healthy and allows you to continue to grow, repair , have clear mind control and a pain free attitude. This all helps with achieving your goals, --- professional or physical. Until I met up with Matt, I suffered for 12 years with pain in my neck and low back.

Hello Sandy,

Its been about a month now and it is going ok. Since seeing the orthopedic doc, I have not performed any squats or any movements that may put ALOT of pressure on my spine. I have not seen a chiro yet because I am waiting to transfer over to my wife’s insurance, then I will go regularly. As for now, I am doing great. I have purchased a pad for my lower back for my chair at work, which helps. Bending and squatting the correct way has helped as well.

Thanks for the inquiry.
