I wanted to so bad go to the seminar you guys had this past weekend down in Md(OCB Seminar), so I could meet some of you that are n the boards all time, but had committed to going to an NSCA Seminar(Symposium) that had some really top of the line speakers and presented some really great info, plus I received .8 CEU's for my CSCS certification as well as 8 hours of professional development for my teaching required hours, who could pass up something llike that!! The 1st speaker was Dr. Nicholas Ratamess, who does some major research for the College of NJ in terms of Exercise Science as he discussed the Acute Training Design Variables for Maximzing Strength and Power!! These went onto describe things like muscle action, load, volume, Exercise selection and workout structure, exercise order, rest intervals, Repetition velocity, and frequency!! Some really great new research coming out as we saw some new stuff yet to be presented at the ACSM News Conference!! the 2nd speaker was Dr. Jie Kang, who also works for the College of NJ, and went into Body Composition and Athletic Performance!! the 3rd speaker was Avery Faigenbaum, who also works for the College of NJ, and discussed Building a Young Healthy Athlete, the risks of overworking our youths, extreme on way while the other side of the coin was the obesity epidemic we are facing in our schools and trying to find that happy medium!! the 4th Speaker was Dr Jay Hoffman, who alo works for the Colleg of NJ, and has done extensive research on the efeects of Periodization for Strength/Power Enhancement!! he broke down models of periodization and how it has helped out to continue to train even during the the contest season as a lot of athletes lose a lot of strength when they don't keep up with maintenance phase during competition!! the 5th Speaker was one of the KEYNOTE SPEAKERS, Dr. Jeffrey Stout, who was the main man behind the Book Nutrient Timing and now works at Florida Atlantic University , as he showed the overwhelming evidence of how beneficial portein especially but with some carbs(ie. Gatorade) can create a very anabolic situation with a good amount of Fat free mass gained from each of the studies that were taken out of 5 different countries and they basically came up with the same conclusion: Pre and during- consume some CHO and Protein(whey 20 g), 30-40 min before training during training sip on some CHO's(gatorade) Post- Immediately after high volume resistance training drink a protein shake that contains about 20 g of whey+ casein combo or drink 20 oz of skim milk -eat solid food 1 hour later Dr Stout was again giving out the latest research on the nutrient timinng that has yet to be presented at the ACSM conference in July!! The 6th speaker was Dr. Jose Antonio, who is the CEO of the ISSN , and has written many published works and writes artcles each month in M &F as well as Ironman!! He talked about supplemental strategies for Youths and how impotant it is they are growing!! He again wnet onto talk about how useful creatine is how it has helped many problem youths with health, such as the youth soccer team with no side effects and imporved scores on the sprinting and dribbling, while wrkoing with boys with (DD) Duchenne Musclular dystrophy and the gains in FFMass they made with no side effects, as well as Cratine replacement in infants that were loaded with this stuff and had normal creatine levels return in their brain as well as their muscles!! He also went on to discuss the how 2 great supplemetns are working for the obesity problems in this country and have worked wonders with the kids today one being caffeine and the other being EPHEDRA Yep thats right!! Lastly, we went to an applied training tract that was hands on and we did 3 rotations where we went over Maximizing squat Performance with John taylor one of the top strength and conditioning coaches in the country!! We went over a lot of the lower back muscles needing a lot of endurance and worked on the flexibilty of the Core!! Next we did Speed and Agility training for sport with Michael Barnes, used to be the strength and conditioning coach for the 49er's and is now director of Education for the NSCA lastly we worked with a local Strength and Conditioning Caoch about teaching Youth Olympic Style Lifts and this was great to see that it is starting to catch on in this area and how important it is to get our youths more active than ever!! The Symposium was very informative and got some new ideas for training with the youths in our schools right now as well as some good info on supplementing around your worouts to feed the body for that great nutrient timing!!!!! Craig Yarnall, CSCS, CPT, WNBF Pro "Lifetime Natural Bodybuilder" "Train Hard and Stay Natural" "Want A Bigger Body, Squat DEEP" "The truth is that you will probably never reach your full bodybuilding potential without doing the Squat. The squat forces your whole body to GROW!"--TOM PLATZ | ||
