Hey all,
How many of you have dealt with a hernia? I was diagnosed with one today. I have a meeting with the surgeon on Thurs, for now Im uncertain what I can and cannot do, and the GP wasnt very specific. On the one hand I was a bit down as I was planning on the Team U and had been training very intense, too intense I guess. However, Ive been here before and it took two years but I came back better than ever, so I cant get to down about it. After my win in my open class at the Mr Cincy I was hit by pelvic pain and had to take two years off, that was two months after the show, this time two months after the NKY win this happened. Eerie coincidence I guess... in any event Im not trying to bellyache over it (no pun intended), lol, but would like to know how many have had this issue. From my research it seems to be that 3 weeks post op I can be lifting again, though I doubt very intensely.... Anything you all can share with me would be helpful. |

A buddy of mine at the gym recently had one and he was out about 3-4 wks of no lifting. After that he was advised to start out light even though he didn't. He got lucky and it didn't reoccur but I wouldn't chance it. Your in such good shape I don't think you would lose to much with the time off.

That sucks. That Team U win will have to wait a year or two. Hope your recovery goes well.

If it can be done laproscopy (sp), go for that route. I had the inguinal type, back in the gym the next week AND, lifting quite heavy, but I waited a couple of weeks for squats.
Don't be down...check with a couple of surgeons, maybe Fitdoc will tell you your best options. Frank "Lift and be happy. Lift harder and be excited...Get Excited, Get Big!!!" |

HEY JASON, I JUST HAD HERNIA SURGERY JAN.7 OF THIS YEAR. I WAS DOWN FOR THE FULL SIX WEEKS. I WAS TOLD NO LIFTING ANYTHING OVER 25 LBS. RIGHT NOW I'M DOING WELL...PUSHING MORE DAILY BUT IT WAS A STRUGGLE BOTH MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY AT FIRST. MY HERNIA WAS IN MY GROIN AREA...PAINFUL!

Thanks fellas,
I think since mine is at the bellybutton it should be a quicker recovery like Jared stated, inguinal hernias are trickier business I believe. This isnt that painful and I was told by one guy he kept training and waited 3 yrs to fix his, though I wont wait that long, as his became constricted, meaning the intestine dies due to lack of blood and gets infected, he wa throwing up and had to have surgery immediately. I know myself I wont be able to train with the intensity required to compete with my guts hanging out my navel, so if the surgeon says its okay, Ill probably train light high rep up to the date of my surgery then just rest the required time. Im pretty sure with a navel surgery you can be doing cardio 5-7 days later, so Ill be able to stay in decent shape I think, diet will be adjusted according to my caloric expenditure. |

I was diagnosed with one over 10 years ago and never got an operation. Basically I laid off heavy squats for awhile and it kind of healed up. I had a real pronounced outie for a long time. As far as other recoveries I had L-3 Discectomy a few years ago, one of the worst ones my doctor ever saw, 6 hour emergency surgery He said I would never compete again, less than 5 months later I won my class at an NPC national qualifier. Also about 2 years ago I had my Gallbladder out, from being on lowfat diets for so many years, and 2 days later I was back in the gym and 3 months later winning my class again at INBF NYS show. The point I'm making is don't let it get you down if you have that strong desire to be in the game , nothing can stop you! Good Luck!

wow bob, thats a lot of recoveries.
Surgeon said I can lift, just watch it. I can train until I get my surgery sometime in June, just if it starts to hurt back off a bit. Ill probably watch heavy squats and deads for a bit. At least I dont have to sit idle until the surgery, post op I should be good to go 4 weeks post surgery. |

Now that the shock of having a hernia and seeing the surgeon--knowing mine isnt that bad, I wonder what some of you think.
Im pondering waiting until after Sept 13 and hitting the Team U still (the original goal) on Sept 6. I was told it wont get better, but just watch it and see what happens. It doesnt really hurt anymore and wearing a belt with training doesnt bother it at all. I can still go heavy and hard and its not popped out with the belt. Uhhhh, decisions, I always say health first but sitting out for 6 weeks this summer is not sitting well with me and I really want to hit Team U while its good timing, and now is good timing for me. I feel Im a bit on a roll now, dont know why, lol! |

Jason-hate to hear about the hernia.
If the doc says you can still train-go for it and just be cautious. You know your body best, if it gets worse you can slack off a bit. Leslie |

Jason,
I have had an umbilical hernia for years now and it only bothers me sporadically. A few weeks ago I saw my doctor and he said I shouldn't worry about it because of the strength my abdominal wall etc. If it's not bothering you, I would say stick with the training while keeping tabs on its condition. Good Luck! |

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, Im considering now waiting until after Team U and the summer and getting surgery mid September.
We'll see how it feels, but right now its not hurting at all anymore. I even played soccer last night with a compression wrap on it, no problems. |

Wow JTheo...i feel for ya man.
My dog had one...lol. No seriously, she had one when she was born, and the vet operated a couple weeks after she was born. But then she wasn't training for a contest either... Speedy recovery dude. |

Chances are the pain was from the initial tear or from a most recent, enough for you to notice. If you get the option, go for the easiest fix. I had both types of surgery and the laparoscopy was by far the easiest! Frank "Lift and be happy. Lift harder and be excited...Get Excited, Get Big!!!" |
