Here's what I recently found:
Allium cepa and Allium sativum) Onion and garlic have significant blood sugar lowering action. The principal active ingredients are believed to be allyl propyl disulphide (APDS) and diallyl disulphide oxide (allicin), although other constitutents such as flavonoids may play a role as well. Experimental and clinical evidence suggests that APDS lowers glucose levels by competing with insulin for insulin-inactivating sites in the liver. This results in an increase of free insulin.APDS administered in doses of 125 mg/ kg to fasting humans was found to cause a marked fall in blood glucose levels and an increase in serum insulin. Allicin doses of 100 mg/kg produced a similar effect. Onion extract was found to reduce blood sugar levels during oral and intravenous glucose tolerance. The effect improved as the dosage was increased; however, beneficial effects were observed even for low levels that used in the diet (eg., 25 to 200 grams). The effects were similar in both raw and boiled onion extracts. Onions affect the hepatic metabolism of glucose and/or increases the release of insulin, and/or prevent insulin's destruction. The additional benefit of the use of garlic and onions are their beneficial cardiovascular effects. They are found to lower lipid levels, inhibit platelet aggregation and are antihypertensive. So, liberal use of onion and garlic are recommended for diabetic patients. *********************** If anything, there seems to be a health benefit. Frank "Lift and be happy. I believe in it, depends what you want to use. R-ala supposedly works some, but I use the main cofactors to insulin, chrom poly and van sulfate.
Think about it though as bodybuilders we constantly eat, science has shown those that eat lower calories daily live longer, why do you suspect that is? Its becuase they arent spiking their insulin every 2.5 hrs, insulin may be anabolic but its also an inflammatory hormone too, more inflammation more cell breakdown, aging etc. My two cents. |

Could it be that compared to the general public, we also like to know the food content and try to stay away from mass produced process food? Before ever working with diabetics, I noticed their diets to be similar to body builders. The portions, the carb counting, especially for each meal. We would sit down for each meal because our meal timing was about the same in the 12 hour shift. Even the foods were close. Now, I closely watch developments from them in how to help control glucose levels. I use onions, but not that much. I just may add them to chopped white potato. The use of cinnamon also helps and has a measure of mimicing insulin. Now, how about a fat melter. Can you imagine the promotion on this?! "This revolutionary topical cream just melts the fat away. Spread it on those hard to lose spots and follow the directions." "Directions: Apply on skin evenly. Use prior to workout. Works best when following a strict diet and exercise..." Frank I think you might have missed my point based on what you quoted and then followed up with.
My point is those that eat less calories daily lived longer in scientific studies. Now bodybuilders, we surely dont eat less calories, so my point is I do like to employ a gda to keep less insulin secretion as if I did eat fewer calories, less inflammation and degenerative diseases. Not to mention it allows me to have a harder more vascular look while taking larger quantities of carbs. |

Jason, I didn't miss the point at all I just added to it on a different tangent. I saw that study. I think it used sedentary people, too which only makes sense. They're not obese.
True, just because one is obese does not mean they're not healthy. Body builders in general are not over eaters. We eat a lot, time meals and attempt to avoid the peaks and valleys of blood glucose. The other points were ideas on how it may help to maintain a more level chart. Then I went on to poke fun at those that will not workout and look for the easy way to shape abs. Me? I'd love to be filled with food and yet, be healthy. Just trying to add on to what you've said and in a positive way pointing to what body builders are wanting to achieve. A good body in a healthy way for long term benefits. Frank "Lift and be happy. Lift harder and be excited...Get Excited, Get Big!!!" |

I got ya I dropped my carbs to 330 today, not joking, and Im tired and feeling the effects. LOL! I guess I didnt process it all.
But, I do have to add that maybe you dont overeat, but I just came off a 6 week force feeding to TRY to add LBM, my body cuts easily but DAYUM does it want to be stubborn in terms of adding lean mass in any appreciable quantity. |
