Not sure what section to put this in, sorry. Ok, I am new to sweet potatos, never thought I would like them, but I really do!! Anyway, how do you choose good ones? Here lately I can't seem to get a good one, they have no taste & cook up too soft. I buy the microwavable ones that are wrapped up. I cook for about 6 min. I have tried cooking less, but they still taste like yuk!! Just how do ya choose them??
HUGE fan of the sweet potato! Not much in ways of 'choosing' a good sweet potato. There isn't much variation. I personally like my sweet potato like pudding! REALLY soft with cinnamon and stevia!! YUMMMMMmmmmm... anyways, I bake up a half dozen or more at a time in the oven at 475 for 1.5 hours and let the sit in the oven all day. Nice and soft. When you microwave them, they get DRY and Hard.
You will get WAY more bang for your buck buying bulk sweet potatos rather than the individually wrapped ones (personally think those are a comlete rip off)
I think if you try baking them in the oven for just under an hour, you may like the taste better and won't be overly soft, as you don't like that texture.

I always buy them bulk, the pre-wrapped is way too expensive for as much as I eat. I steam them in a steamer about 4 to 5lbs at a time. It only takes about 35 minutes and they turn out great always. I've read that steaming is a great way to cook because your food retains more nutritional value.
I personally do the same as what Chunky does except that I like to cut them up as french fries, cook in bulk and eat what I need as french fries, i.e. if your plan calls for 5 oz sweet potato, I have mine as french fries. Makes it more fun to eat and breaks up the monotony.
Just my 2 cents.....
PS Shar is right, buying the sweet potatoes pre-wrapped are way to expensive. It is expensive enough to eat healthier than most people that are not watching their macros.

I just buy them, place them in the microwave (after washing and poking holes in them), then put in on high ~5-8 mins (per potato) depending on the size. Then I remove and wrap them in 2 sheets of aluminum foil and throw it in my food bag. The Al foil allows it to keep cooking. Later in the day, I just pull it out and eat it like an apple or throw it on a plate, if I have time. Sometimes Neanderthalish but tastes great and less filling I eat a can of tuna with it for some protein. Hope this helps.
Buying sweet potatoes in bulk is the best way, those prewrapped ones are a rip off. Since they are more expensive than bulk, you also never know how "old" they are - perhaps the ones you've purchased were old and that's why they didn't taste very good. Like Drew, I microwave several at a time, wrap them up and then use them as needed. I just poke holes in them and throw in for about 8 minutes (I turn them halfway thru) and they always come out good.
pretty much everything in United stated labeled yams are sweet potatos anyway. id actually like to get yams but can rarely find them. why do you say that stranger?
